Shire allows more time for Cowaramup consultation
The Shire of Augusta Margaret River has extended the public consultation period for the Cowaramup Integrated Transport Strategy (ITS), which it says will give the community more time to be involved in “developing long-term solutions” to improve road safety within the town.
“The goal of the ITS is to create a safer transport environment for Cowaramup,” Shire Director of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure Nick Logan explained.
“We’re keen to work closely with everyone who lives and works in the town to determine the best possible solutions.
“We’re hoping that extending the consultation period for an extra couple of weeks allows everyone to share their thoughts on the ITS with us.”
While Bussell Highway is managed by Main Roads WA, the Shire is responsible for the majority of roads in Cowaramup.
In 2023, in collaboration with Main Roads, the Shire engaged a consultant to undertake a traffic study for Cowaramup to create the ITS.
“Last week’s Community Information Session and drop-in sessions were well attended and provided valuable insights from a broad cross-section of the community, including a Year 6 class from Cowaramup Primary School, parents with young children and people with diverse abilities,” Mr Logan said.
The Shire said it had already received over 50 community submissions and extended its gratitude to those who had taken the time to share their thoughts and time at the Information Session and drop-in sessions, as well as through an online form.
“Many great suggestions have been made to date, with strong support being expressed for upgrading the school crossing to pedestrian operated traffic signals,” Mr Logan said.
“Other ideas being submitted have been additional and improved signage and line marking at intersections, restricting movements to and from streets along Bussell Highway, reduced speed limits on other streets, formalising the gravel car parks and support for some speed limit reductions”.
“Our ITS outlines a range of potential solutions to improve road safety and encourage more walking and cycling and we’re keen to get our community’s input to ensure we deliver the best possible solutions.”
Instead of closing this week, the Shire said it would extend the consultation period for the a further two weeks, allowing submissions to be made until Friday, October 11.
