Mitch Delfs went to Cairns with "zero expectations", and took out the win.

Margaret River region local Mitchell Delfs had a huge win at the recent World Masters Downhill Championship 2024.

A source close to the rider said it was a few years ago when Delfs and a few supporters decided to take on the championships when he reached the age of 35.

“When Cairns 2024 was announced, they booked tickets and enlisted a couple of old friends to help build the dream race bike and kit.

With riders from 25 countries in Cairns to compete, Delfs and his team had “zero expectation”.

After two days practice, Delfs threw down the fastest qualifying and race time of 3.36.123 to become the new World Masters Downhill Champion for the 35 to 39 age group.

“Race run was unbelievable I was smooth everywhere I wanted to be.

“Took me a while I tried to do it in the elite and wasn’t good enough took me a few years sitting around on the couch enjoying myself but we’re back and we did it can’t believe it.”
