Margaret River Independent School students gathered at Redgate Beach last week to take part in an outdoor day for Nature Conservation Margaret River’s “Adopt A Spot” program.

As the school’s allocated beach ‘spot’ for more than eight years, the iconic location received a visit from the Year 4 MRIS students where they worked to restore and recover the dunes.

Year 4 teacher Tamara Broadbent said students worked regularly on the area to establish native plants, clear rubbish, weed out invasive plants and rebuild dune areas.

The junior custodians have been involved in planting nearly 400 native species to rejuvenate the Redgate sand dunes degraded by human traffic.

The Adopt A Spot program involves schools from around the region taking over the care of coastal, bushland and riverside areas to monitor flora and fauna, learning about the area’s unique properties and understanding the threats it faces.
