WA seeing highest immigration numbers in ten years

In the past ten years, there have been consistent migrations to Australia, but during the pandemic, the whole world shuttered and migration was halted globally. Anyone would have thought that the world would continue as usual post-pandemic, but stats reported poor numbers in 2022, though it was at an all time high in 2023, even going so far as to break previous records pre-pandemic.
Currently, there are much more foreign-born individuals in WA than anywhere else in Australia. Professor Amanda Davies from the University of WA concludes that it definitely has to do with the “very strong job market,” and “well-paid employment with great conditions”, as well as how WA is “a very secure place to live, to raise children, to sort of have a great amount of balance in your life,” as what the professor was quoted as saying to the ABC.
New investments open up opportunities for the region
With the growing population, the government has launched several new projects to boost economic growth and also to cater to their expanding population. There have been talks since early June that a new offshore rig is to be built for enhanced gas production.
They are now calling for over 11,000 resource workers to work on oil and gas projects, clearly creating more job opportunities in an attempt to draw even more interest from migrants and making WA a much more attractive place to settle down in.
More and more aged care facilities have also been revamped and opened to the public, creating even more allure for families to move to the region, especially if they have young children and ageing parents. The South West has also changed the landscape of accessibility through their transport infrastructure project which is a great feature to have for aged citizens so that they are able to get around easily.
Real estate in the South West looking more attractive than ever
Weighing in on the current housing supply crisis, Cameron Lade from home building company, Summit South West shares that, “We’ve seen land availability in the Perth Metropolitan area dry up… We have also seen a significant increase in the demand for investment properties from both local and interstate markets. Investors are taking advantage of the more affordable entry point for house and land packages in the South West, comparatively quicker build times and strong rental returns.”
The family-owned building company, Summit South West, has been helping residents find their dream home in the area for over four decades. Speaking from experience, Lade states, “Not only is the average land lot size a lot bigger than other metropolitan areas, but many housing options are only 10 minutes away from a stunning beach, or a hike, all while still staying within reach of creature comforts such as the nearest Coles and what-have-yous, including schools!”
With West Australia’s aged population at 16% and primed for retirement, the South West is becoming increasingly attractive to those looking to retire into nature, but it is also a great environment for Millennials to raise their children.
Infrastructure development paving the way for future growth
Western Australia’s ability to attract a growing number of migrants is also closely linked to its ongoing infrastructure development, which has become a critical factor in supporting both the region’s expanding population and its economic growth.
Significant investments are being made to improve transport networks, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions across the state, particularly in the South West, where migration numbers are climbing rapidly. These developments are not only boosting the region’s appeal to families and professionals but also creating new opportunities for industries and businesses to thrive.
One of the major infrastructure projects includes the expansion of transport systems to connect more remote areas with urban centers. This makes commuting easier for residents and enhances access to essential services like schools, hospitals, and shopping centers. For families considering a move to Western Australia, these improvements are essential in ensuring a balanced lifestyle, where work, education, and recreation are all within reach.
Healthcare infrastructure is also receiving a significant upgrade, with new hospitals and clinics being built to meet the demands of an ageing population. The government’s focus on providing high-quality aged care services and ensuring accessibility through transport infrastructure makes the region ideal for families with elderly members. Educational institutions, including schools and vocational centers, are also being expanded to accommodate the growing number of young families moving into the region.
These infrastructure investments ensure that Western Australia is well-prepared to handle future population growth while maintaining a high standard of living for its residents, making it an increasingly attractive destination for both local and international migrants.
