Volunteers providing essential support to students
On November 19, volunteers, school staff, and supporters gathered at a Busselton event to celebrate the incredible impact made in local schools this year through the national EdConnect program.
In 2024, a total of 98 dedicated EdConnect school volunteers across the South West contributed an impressive 5,609 hours of their time to support 1,852 students.
The volunteers provided essential emotional, social, and academic support, helping students who need it most.
The total value of this support in 2024 was $269,288, but the impact on students education and engagement at school is immeasurable.
It’s not just the students who benefit – volunteers have the chance to connect with their communities and use their life experience to create a wave of positive change.
“All of our volunteers say that the smiles from students are their favourite part!” EdConnect Area Manager Karen Barden said.
“I’m thrilled about bringing even more caring community members and schools together in 2025 to make a real difference and help students thrive.”
The EdConnect Australia story began more than 25 years ago with four volunteers in one Perth school.
The program now operates in WA, Victoria and NSW with almost 1,000 volunteers in more than 260 schools to assist 19,750 students.
Volunteers work in local schools with young people who might otherwise struggle to realise their potential in school and in life.
The program will offer more fun and flexible ways for locals to get involved in 2025, including the Breakfast Club – perfect for busy or working people – as well as helping with reading, mentoring, or providing classroom support.
Volunteers are urgently needed to help bolster and expand the program to students in need.
“Just an hour a week can make a huge difference.”
