Vocal coach leads the way for young talents

As Soundwaves Singing Studio celebrates its 15th year in Quindalup, founder Sussane Siegrist continues to share her passion for music and song with the community.
From teaching tiny young talents to mentoring rising stars like Australian Idol finalist Phoebe Stewart, her dedication empowers students to discover their true voices, confidence, and self-belief.
“Singing is so personal,” Sussane said. “As soon as someone enters the room and opens their mouth to sing, they’re vulnerable.”
“Most people can hide behind their instruments, but your voice is entirely you in the raw. People are incredibly brave when they come in here.”
Her journey from the Sydney Conservatorium’s Opera School to setting up her studio has been shaped by a profound understanding of musical expression.
While her classical background lays the groundwork for her teaching, Sussane embraces all styles. “It doesn’t matter what you sing. I’m here to nurture that talent,” she shared.
Her studio offers group sessions for children, private lessons, and mentored junior vocal teachers.
Beyond technique, Sussane’s teaching emphasises personal growth and expression.
“I feel like I’m a counsellor sometimes,” she said.
“It’s about helping them feel confident in their creativity and setting aside their fears.”
Working with different age groups offers unique rewards and challenges.
“I love teaching adults because it’s so personal for them, and there’s more to overcome. They often face many hurdles because somewhere along the way, someone told them they couldn’t sing.”
For teenagers, songwriting serves as a vital outlet.
“It gives them a way to express all those feelings of angst and thoughts in words. Singing is a form of expression, and in our culture, we often feel like we can’t voice ourselves, especially during our teenage years.”

This holistic approach achieved significant success with student Phoebe Stewart during her Australian Idol journey in 2023.
The experience rekindled Sussane’s connection with award-winning Sydney based singer, songwriter, and music producer Audius Mtawarira, renowned for his work with Jessica Mauboy and Delta Goodrem.
This reunion resulted in five inspiring visits to the south west, where Audius collaborated with Sussane’s students in singing and songwriting workshops and masterclasses.
Their partnership has created remarkable opportunities, with thirteen young, talented local musicians preparing for a regional tour to showcase their original songs.
The SHINE Project Songwriter Tour will journey through Dardanup, Nannup, Manjimup, Bridgetown, and Pemberton from April 5-11, finishing at the Busselton Youth Festival. ”
These kids’ songs are absolutely brilliant!” Sussane said.
Her drive to support young talent stems from her own early experiences.
“I was one of those very young, talented singers in the classical world, but I didn’t have much discipline to work hard and I didn’t have a lot of support behind me.”
“My family were amazing, but back then, singing was viewed as ‘the hobby,’ not something you pursued full-time,” she recalled.
“I want to pass on the wisdom that comes with age. I don’t want them to face the same blockages I encountered.”
For Sussane, her greatest joy comes from watching students discover their potential.
“If you love it, just do it! And if something comes of it… brilliant! But you might as well enjoy the journey,” she said.
“When you give people opportunities, they’ll rise to the occasion.”

“I always say those who reach…touch the stars!”
Thanks to community support, including a $4,000 contribution from the Dunsborough & Districts Progress Association (DDPA), these young musicians are closer to realising their touring dream.
To help these talented artists reach for the stars, a special screening of “Maria” will be held at Orana Cinemas on February 6th, with tickets including refreshments and raffle opportunities.
