Tigers finish season with unbeaten run

It was a tense affair at Hands Memorial Oval on Sunday, as the HBL Lions did their best to end South Bunbury's dream run in the 2024 SWFL season.

South Bunbury have gone through the home and away matches of the SWFL season undefeated after beating Harvey Brunswick Leschenault at Hands Memorial Oval on Sunday afternoon by two points.

It took less than sixty seconds for Lachlan Riley to kick the opening goal, and when Richard Bourne scored after just three minutes, things looked ominous for HBL.

Two quick goals to Lattrell May had the Lions in front. Having kicked three goals in four minutes, the Tigers replied with three of their own through Johnson with a snap from the left forward pocket, Kade Wallrodt from right in front and Johnson again from the right pocket, to have the Tigers 11 points in front at quarter time.

The second quarter was a tight affair with both teams missing opportunities. The first came eight minutes in when the ball landed in the hands of Martin to narrow the margin to four points. The Lions were back in front when John Manuel took a strong pack mark. For the next fifteen minutes, both teams duked it out, both kicking three behinds, with Blaine Johnson converting a set shot with 12 seconds remaining to give the Tigers a three point lead. The Lions won the ruck contest and Ty Anderson kicked a stunning goal as the siren sounded, putting the visitors back in front at half time.

Scoring dried up in the third, with Xavier Milner kicking the Lions only goal, while Johnson kicked his fourth for the Tigers.

A pulsating final term had Wallrodt putting the Tigers nine points in front, and it was thought that might break the Lions resistance. It didn’t, with Milner finding himself unattended in the goal square, narrowing the margin again. Both teams missed set shots, as the pressure built, and when Ben Horsman goaled from a high tackle the Tigers appeared home at the 21 minute mark. However, Ty Anderson kicked a brilliant goal, evading three players again to reduce the margin to two points with just minutes remaining. Both teams would kick a behind each before the ball went back into the forward line for the Lions, but they were unable to get a clear kick away to win.
