A partnership between local community groups and business has seen the creation and installation of new seating and planter boxes in Busselton’s city centre.

The Building Busselton Town team has used funding received from the City of Busselton’s Community Assistance Program to partner with Busselton Men’s Shed and Jupps Floor Coverings, building the planter boxes and bench seating for two areas in Queen and Prince Streets.

“Our group works on initiatives to encourage a vibrant and attractive city centre,” Town Team President Lisa Massey said.

“We identified that two areas in Queen and Prince Streets that would benefit from brightening up and requested support to help it happen.”

Busselton Men’s Shed agreed to build the planter boxes and benches, provided the building materials could be sourced.

Busselton business, Jupps Floor Coverings, agreed to donate the flooring panels, while staff at Australia Post and APM Employment Services on Queen Street stepped up with a promise to water the plants regularly.

The waterwise plants have been planted into a mix containing moisture-retaining clay.

“It is wonderful to have such generous businesses in our community,” Lisa said.

“This project came together very easily with Jupps’ support. Then the group of talented handymen at Busselton Men’s Shed built the structures very quickly, they’ve done a great job.”

Coordinator at the Men’s Shed, Trevor Fisher, said members enjoyed working with other community groups on community initiatives such as this one.

“This project had a clear vision and design with the materials supplied,” he said.

“And when it comes with cakes for our morning tea, we never say no!”

Lisa said she hoped the project would demonstrate to businesses that these types of installations could make a “huge difference” to pedestrians, “giving separation from passing traffic, encouraging people to linger in nodes to enjoy street activity or simply take a rest”.

“This also boosts custom for all businesses,” she said.
