Swim Goorbilyup: In sync with rhythm of the river

There was a great turnout for last year's Swim Goorbilyup event, celebrating the beautiful Blackwood River, its history, and environmental significance to the region. Images supplied.

A unique swim event will return to the Blackwood River next month, offering participants the chance to swim with the current in one of Western Australia’s most scenic and historically rich rivers, while connection with others without the pressure to compete.

‘Swim Goorbilyup’ – named for the local term for the Blackwood – is the brainchild of Swimming Women’s Charlotte O’Beirne, who said the event was more than a swim, it’s a journey into nature, culture and community.

“Swim Goorbilyup is about connecting with nature, people, and the ancient rhythms of this land,” she said.

“Here, we invite swimmers to slow down, take in the surroundings, and experience the pure joy of open water in a truly remarkable setting.”

Unlike typical open-water races, there’s no timing or placing; instead, swimmers are encouraged to embrace the experience, tune into the river’s flow, and connect with fellow participants in a setting brimming with natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Charlotte said it was about swimming with nature, not against it.

Participants can choose to take part in a 2 kilometre swim, or a 1 kilometre walk and 1 kilometre return swim along the river.

“Participants will enjoy a remarkable immersion in the Blackwood River’s super tidal waters, where the course may shift according to the river’s own rhythms.

“With the guidance of brightly coloured markers, swimmers can navigate with ease while taking in the changing river landscape.”

Participants can choose to take part in a 2 kilometre swim – ideal for those wanting to glide with the river’s current – or a 1 kilometre walk and 1 kilometre return swim along the river.

Local Wadandi custodian Zac Webb will be present, offering participants a deeper understanding of the area’s indigenous significance.

The event has been supported by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, allowing organisers to conduct training and education sessions for volunteers and community members in surf lifesaving, aquatic resilience and first aid.

Registration includes an event swim cap, a handmade pottery mug, and a warm post-swim treat of Bahen & Co hot chocolate or Ripple Effect Tea.

“For just $65, swimmers gain access to a fully supported, safe, and memorable experience.”

Swim Goorbilyup will be held on Sunday December 1 at the Turner Street Jetty, Augusta.

Registration opens at 10:30am on the day, with the event starting at 12:00pm.

Participation registration closes 5pm November 24.
