In October, community members living with cancer in the South West region will have access to valuable wellness resources.

Cancer Council WA has announced the start of their Life Now Term 4 timetable.

The timetable offers free online courses designed to support the physical and mental health of cancer patients and their carers.

Claire Duffy, the Life Now Program Coordinator, shares the heart behind these new offerings.

“Our Life Now Exercise and Meditation programs aim to introduce exercise and meditation in a safe and supportive environment. We hope to empower people to take control of their wellbeing,” she explains.

Ms Duffy highlights the tangible benefits these courses can bring.

“Research has found that exercise serves as an effective medicine for people with cancer; those who exercise regularly experience fewer and milder side effects from their treatments,” she said.

The courses are open to anyone affected by cancer, along with their primary carers.

Jessica Beal, who joined the Life Now Meditation, Tai Chi, and Yoga sessions after being diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma, exemplifies the program’s positive impact.

Jessica recalls the shock of her diagnosis in 2023. “I was at work and felt like I couldn’t breathe, so I booked in to see the GP,” she shared.

“A series of tests revealed that I had stage 4 lymphoma.

“The week before, I had joked that I needed more cardio after struggling to breathe during a hike.

“I never imagined it could be cancer.”

As Jessica underwent treatment, she found solace in the Life Now Tai Chi classes.

“Starting that first Tai Chi class while undergoing chemotherapy was a lifeline,” she said.

“It gave me a reason to get out of bed and stay active, which was crucial to my wellbeing.

“The psychological benefits were immense as well.

“Coping with cancer brings a lot of stress and unknowns. These classes provided some much-needed stability.”

In January 2024, Jessica received the life-changing news that she was cancer-free after six rounds of chemotherapy.

Since then, she has focused on regaining her strength and returning to her everyday life.

Jessica believes wholeheartedly in the value of the Life Now courses.

“To anyone considering these classes, just do it!”

“There’s only positive to gain, so I think people will miss out if they don’t try what’s offered,” she said.

Claire Duffy said she was heartened by feedback like Jessica’s.

“Hearing stories like Jessica’s reaffirms the importance of what we do,” she said.

“Numerous studies show the benefits of exercise and meditation, from improved wellbeing to reduced anxiety and stress.

“These first-hand accounts of how Life Now has made a positive difference in their life are beyond wonderful!” she added.

The Term 4 timetable offers a range of online Zoom classes, making it convenient for participants to join from the comfort of their home:

Those interested in joining can apply by visiting the Cancer Council WA website at www.cancerwa.asn.au and viewing the Event Calendar.

Alternatively, they can call 131120 to speak to a cancer nurse.

Eligibility criteria apply, and early registration is essential as spaces are limited.

The Life Now program offers more than just wellness courses for cancer patients in our South West community.

It provides a sense of connection, reaffirming that individuals are not alone and that there is a pathway of hope to better physical and mental health during a highly challenging time.
