Sues Road land to be saved for sport

The City of Busselton says a recent acquisition of land at Sues Road in Yalyalup will provide a new space for sporting and recreation activities which often struggle to find suitable locations in the region.

The City acquired the 465 hectares of land in September, and said it was part of a strategy to provide for the needs of the growing community.

It has been earmarked to potentially accommodate the kinds of sports which the City said had proven difficult to locate for several decades, such as pistol and clay target shooting, motorcross and go-karts, cycling and archery and bow sports.

“The City is delighted to have been able to secure this large parcel of land to enable growth of these sports in our community,” Mayor Phill Cronin said.

“The next steps for us will be to discuss the strategic opportunities and uses with the State Government, undertake conceptual site planning to analyse opportunities and constraints, engage with prospective tenant clubs and form a working group to guide future planning and development activities.”

In 2021 the City sold 136 hectares of land in Ambergate to help fund the purchase of the property.

A lease back arrangement has been negotiated to allow Tronox to continue its mineral sands mining operations on the property for the next few years while the City undertakes site analysis and planning.

The City said the lease would allow for a staged handover of rehabilitated mining areas over coming years, enabling the City to commence development and utilisation of portions of the site prior to Tronox fully exiting their operations.
