The 2025 Southwest Interschool Surfing competition was a big day of fun in the surf for kids from three schools across the Capes. Images supplied.

Competitors in the 2025 Southwest Interschool Surfing competition headed to the coast last week for an amazing day of surfing, with solid eight foot swell rolling in, providing some rippable walls at contest site Inside Grunters.

Cowaramup Primary School Physical Education teacher, Max Alcock said the competition day was a blast, with plenty of local supporters helping to keep the young surfers safe and successful in the water.

“Simon Tien from the Margaret River Surf Academy and Josh Palmateer were running the event, while Perry Hatchett from Water Patrol Australia was providing water safety in the line-up.

“Keighley Bremner and Margaret River Primary School Aboriginal Islander Education Officer Jansie Sonter opened the competition, along with many other teachers and parents who were also involved in assisting with the event.”

Students from Cowaramup Primary School, Dunsborough Primary School and host school Margaret River PS were on deck to take part in the event, in which Margaret River students claimed a close victory over Dunsborough, with third place going to Cowaramup PS.

“The competition promotes fun and safety, with students surfing in mixed teams, gaining points for their school,” Mr Alcock explained.

Lucy Bowdell collected the Best Wipeout Award, while Jack Bremner took out the Best Barrel Award, and Lacey Davies received the Spirit Award for her encouraging attitude throughout the day.
