Students from Margaret River and Busselton have been shortlisted in the 2024 Cinesnaps Short Film Competition, and will showcase their films at a red-carpet event on Tuesday 3 September, as part of the 17th annual 2024 CinefestOZ Film Festival.

Nine short films were selected as finalists, created by students from schools in Albany, Bunbury, Busselton and Margaret River.

The competition is open to middle and high school students in WA’s South West, Great Southern, Broome and Geraldton regions, and requires students to submit an original, three-to-five-minute short film based on a theme.

This year, the selected them was ‘Frame‘.

St Mary McKillop’s Indi Sneddon was also named a finalist for her film, The Lost Pages. Pictures supplied.

“This is the 12th year of the competition and I continue to be amazed at the dedication and talent shown by young people across Western Australia,” CinefestOZ Community Manager Gabrielle Whirledge said.

“We look forward to sharing the films – created by our filmmakers of the future – on the big screen for the first time at the grand finale event and also presenting our winning filmmakers in the Year 10-12 category with $1000 in prize money.”

Finalists in the Year 10-12 category include When We Were Young, by Georgiana Molloy Anglican School student Chloe Francis, and The Lost Pages by St Mary MacKillop student filmmaker, Indi Sneddon.

Margaret River SHS trio Sam, Jake & Reznar submitted Framed, which was also shortlisted for the $1000 prize.

Films will be judged by a jury of film professionals, and will screen at Orana Cinemas in Busselton on September 3, where winners will be announced.

GMAS student Chloe Francis has had her film, When We Were Young, named in the finalists of the 2024 Cinesnaps competition.

Since it began in 2008, the Cinesnaps program has engaged more than 55,000 students, many of whom have gone on to work in film production, behind the scenes and in front of the camera.

A range of activities are undertaken with students, including special guest workshops, cinema screenings with guest Q&As, and CineOnline offering a variety of filmmaking insight and digital workshops ready for the classroom.
