A number of South West sporting events have been successful in the first round of the State Government’s Sport and Recreation Events Funding Program.

Successful projects and events involve a wide range of sports and recreation activities – including football, basketball, netball, golf, softball, hockey, squash, running, swimming, hiking, cycling, kiteboarding, yachting, judo, and dragon boat racing.

Busselton Allsports Inc received $20,000 towards the annual Busselton Jetty Swim, while Kiteboarding WA will deliver the Augusta Big Air Nationals in 2024 thanks to a $27,400 grant.

Celebrating its 20th year, the Margaret River Ocean Swim was also successful with a $38,875 grant, and the Busselton Festival of Triathlon received a $50,000 boost to the popular Busselton Foreshore event.

Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman said the funding would help local athletes compete at a higher level on home soil.

“The emphasis of the grants is also to encourage community participation in these events, to inspire our sporting hopefuls to excel in their chosen field of endeavour, and get the public involved as well,” he said.

“Many regional WA events are supported in this round of funding, aimed at overcoming the extra challenges of distance faced by our regional athletes and competitors.

“With another round of funding opening at the end of January 2024, I would urge those involved in organising sporting and recreational events to be held in WA, to apply for financial support.”

Applications for the next round of the Sport and Recreation Events Funding Program, will open on Monday, 29 January and close on Monday, 26 February 2024.
