Senior service lends helping hand in Margaret River

The Community Centre offers a weekly Centre for Seniors, while the Staying in Place program offers help for locals to stay in their own homes as they age.

Seniors living in the area are being encouraged to make use of an important free service being offered each week at the Margaret River Community Centre.

The Community Centre for Seniors is held at the old Doctor’s Surgery building (Soupie) every Tuesday morning from 10am to 12pm.

“We offer an informal drop-in centre where older people can share a cuppa and cake, a chat and some activities, as well as gather information so they can make informed and considered choices about how to access the support services they require now, or may need in time, to stay in their home and community as they age,” the MRCC’s Sally Hays explained.

“Our Staying in Place coordinator, Anni Kamppi, is available to discuss your support package needs as, together with a team of volunteers, we welcome you to our free and friendly Community Centre for Seniors gathering place and information service.”

Over the coming weeks, the Centre for Seniors will host a number of special presentations, including:

Tuesday 18 March, 10.30 -11.30am – Red Cross Aged Care Services, Main Meeting Room (No booking needed).

Tuesday 1 April, 10.30 – 11.30am – WA Seniors Card information, Soupie cottage (No booking needed).

Wednesday 26 March 9.00 – 11.30am Federal government Aged Care Act and Support at Home program, Main Meeting Room (Registrations essential 6185 8847 or brian.gallacher@health.gov.au)

The Staying in Place program offers help to those wishing to stay in their own homes as long as possible.

“Our local coordinator will work with you to help you stay living at home as you get older,” Sally said.

“They can help with understanding and getting the most out of My Aged Care home care packages, choosing what type of services work best for you, and choosing who comes into your home to help.

“We look forward to seeing you for morning tea any Tuesday from 10am to 12pm.

“There’s no need to book or enrol, just drop in and you will be welcome.”
