Year 6 St Mary MacKillop College students gather at Our Lady of the Bay Church.

Last week, students from St Mary MacKillop College took to the streets to raise funds for Project Compassion, a charity dedicated to helping people in need worldwide.

Year 6 and Year 7 students took part in the Big Lent Walk, an event designed to promote both physical activity and community service.

With the encouragement of their families and teachers, the students set out on a meaningful journey, covering significant distances to show their commitment to making a difference.

Year 6 students completed a 3.5-kilometre walk, while the Year 7 cohort took on a challenging 7-kilometre route.

“The walk starts at Our Lady of the Bay Church, continues to St Joseph’s Church on Kent Street, and then returns to the College, providing an opportunity for reflection and camaraderie along the way,” a school spokesperson explained.

“The overwhelming generosity of students, their families, and the wider school community has also resulted in a remarkable fundraising total of more than $5,500, with all proceeds going to Project Compassion.

“These funds will support essential initiatives, including access to clean water, education, healthcare, and sustainable development programs for disadvantaged communities around the world.”

“More than just a fundraiser, the Big Lent Walk is encouraging students to embrace the values of service and empathy, reinforcing the importance of taking action to help those less fortunate. St Mary MacKillop College extends its sincere gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the event.”
