Margaret River region cancer charity and support service River Angels has received a massive donation, thanks to the dedication and commitment of a group of locals, local businesses and organisations.

Following the annual AMRzons charity football match on September 13, the team met with River Angels founder Lynda Donovan last week to present a record-breaking $30,835 donation to help local families experiencing cancer.

“I would like to thank everyone involved that donated their time, skills, talent and spirit to what has become a very eagerly anticipated annual event,” Lynda said.

“Thanks to the community for always getting behind it and displaying such generosity.

“We couldn’t do it without you.”

River Angels provides essential services, food, household help, transport and other supports to locals and their families as they navigate their cancer journeys.

Lynda told the Mail the number of families it supports each year continues to grow, with locals aged 2 to 86 years old experiencing a range of cancers currently relying on the charity.

The AMRzons team are passionate supporters of River Angels, along with countless individuals, businesses and groups within our community.

“Our families are always so appreciative and surprised initially at the level of support we receive from the community,” she said.

“To quote one family ‘I can’t adequately express how grateful we are for River Angels and the incredible list of support they offer. It is the definition of what a successful, community led, grass roots initiative looks like, and I can’t wait to give back when we have the capacity’.”

AMRzons spokesperson Jesse Pateman said the team, and its supporters, were thrilled to hand over the cheque at the AMR football club.

“Lynda was absolutely thrilled, and we are so proud of everyone involved in the event,” Jesse said.

Lynda said with demand increasing, it was more important than ever that locals offered whatever help they could.

“Over the last few years, we have noticed a slight decline in volunteer support and the cost of living has contributed to a decrease in some areas of volunteer assistance.

“River Angels requires two things to work – volunteers and money!

“We rely on the generosity of our community to continue our support, as we receive no government assistance and are fully self-funded.

“Every dollar matters and has an impact on the lives of the families we serve.”
