Gracetown hosted its fifth annual kite festival last week, with more than 300 locals heading to Gracetown Oval to celebrate under blue skies and strong winds.

DJ Saramony created a funky music backdrop while festivalgoers flew and made kites, chased lollies falling from the sky, ate real fruit ice cream, had their faces painted and picnicked on the grass.

Professional kite flyer Michael Alvarez was elated with the near perfect flying conditions, and was able to launch his gigantic whale shark and dolphin kites with ease.

Representatives from event sponsors Vasse Felix, Settlers Tavern, Forbes Migration and Flor Marché Wines gathered at the ‘Departure Lounge’ to enjoy the spectacle of a myriad of kites colouring the sky.

The sponsor group was excited to discuss the prospect of renowned local artist Leon Pericles joining the festival in 2025, with a spectacular kite which won an international prize in China in the late 1980s.

“In our fifth year we have succeeded in the perfect mix of elements,” Kite Festival organiser Elizabeth Reed said.

“From face painting to real fruit ice cream and kite flying, to ambient DJ tunes. In 2025, we will build on this success to include market stalls and introduce special guest Leon Pericles.”
