Parklet trial to begin in Busselton city centre
Community group Building Busselton Town Team has received substantial funding from the Streets Alive program jointly funded by the Town Team Movement, Main Roads WA and WA Local Government Association for its new initiative ‘Sitting in the City’.
Lisa Massey, President of Building Busselton Town Team said a parklet trial project would soon commence, beginning with consultation with businesses to gather ideas for the design; and to select sites and hosts.
“The project will create a sense of place and a pedestrian friendly environment by installing a mobile parklet in Busselton’s City centre where people can stop, sit and rest while taking in activity in the street,” she said.
“A parklet not only activates the space outside a business, but also beautifies less vibrant parts of the streetscape.
“This structure will be a premium product, designed for purpose, and colourful. We hope that businesses will see the benefits of this initiative and get on board.”
The parklets will be installed on a street parking bay extending out from the footpath. The parklet will be moved every four months to trial a mix of locations adjacent to supporting businesses.
“Where possible and safe, all interested businesses will be able to host the parklet in an adjacent parking space and experience the impact of providing this attractive refuge adjacent to their premises,” Thomas Chadwick, Building Busselton’s Treasurer said.
“The structure will provide space and amenity for people with seating, tables, shelter, planter boxes, solar lighting and charge points.”
The Streets Alive program aims to create vibrant, safe, and connected communities which are engaged in the planning and transformation of their local streets.
A key objective of the program is to improve the safety of streets by making them more vibrant and people-friendly.
