Busselton Jetty has announced its Underwater Observatory (UWO) will be closed from Monday, 28 July to Friday, 5 September to undergo a major accessibility-focused upgrade, including the installation of a brand-new lift system.

Operations Manager Amy Gornall said the upgrades were “more than a maintenance project”.

“We’re ensuring the Busselton Jetty experience continues to evolve and remain accessible to everyone for generations to come.”

After more than two decades of service, the current lift will be replaced to ensure all visitors – regardless of mobility – can safely access the Observatory’s immersive seafloor experience.

While the UWO is closed, the Jetty team is encouraging visitors to explore the newly launched Discovery Express, a bundled experience which includes a return trip on the Rio Tinto Solar Express Train and entry to the Marine Discovery Centre (MDC).

“The MDC is a fully interactive, all weather, family-friendly exhibit space offering hands-on marine science and storytelling about the ocean’s wonders.”

The lift installation is expected to take up to six weeks, but a Jetty spokesperson said progress will be monitored closely, and the UWO will be reopened earlier if possible.

“UWO bookings have been temporarily paused to allow the project to proceed smoothly, though guests booking the Return Train during this time can register their interest in UWO should an early reopening occur.”

Progress updates will be made through the Busselton Jetty’s social media channels.
