Night Calling: Margaret River's owl story on YouTube

The Taylor-Made story of Australia's first owl-friendly community has been made available to the public via YouTube.

A year after the premiere screening of documentary Night Calling packed out Margaret River HEART, the Owl Friendly Margaret River team has made the film available via its YouTube channel.

The film, created to tell the story of the Masked Owl and its connection with the Margaret River community, has since garnered audiences around WA for its stirring tale of the establishment of Australia’s first owl friendly community.

Dr Boyd Wykes tells the story of Australia’s first owl-friendly community.

Coordinator Dr Boyd Wykes – the storyteller in the Taylor Media documentary – said the YouTube release was in response to requests from community groups and people who missed the theatre screenings.

“The Augusta Margaret River Shire officially adopted the Owl Friendly Margaret River title in 2020, and since then we’ve seen the formation of more Owl Friendly initiatives around the State – now including Denmark, Nannup, Mundaring, Cockburn, East Fremantle, Fremantle, Melville, Rockingham, Geraldton and many others coming on board in the mid-west,” Boyd said.

“One by one, communities are acting to create safe havens for owls and other creatures through wildlife-friendly rodent control.

“The documentary and the other videos on our YouTube channel, including a feature segment on Gardening Australia, are an entertaining way to find out about these amazing birds that need ancient tree hollows to nest but hunt around our homes and farms, and to access practical information on how to control rats and mice without harming precious wildlife.”
