A Dunsborough local is preparing to take part in a gruelling endurance challenge, with the aim of raising much-needed funds to support brain cancer research and care for patients.
Brain cancer survivor Tara Hawken will tackle the Point to Pinnacle half marathon – often referred to as the world’s toughest half marathon event – in Tasmania next week.
The 21.1 kilometre course takes runners up to the summit of Mount Wellington, starting at sea level and ascending to just over 1,270 metres in elevation.
It’s a cause, and a subject, extremely close to Tara’s heart.
“Running the Point to Pinnacle is not just a personal challenge for me; it’s a symbol of hope for everyone affected by brain cancer,” Tara said.
She will face the challenge to raise money and awareness for Carrie’s Beanies 4 Brain Cancer, a charity dedicated to funding research and providing support for brain cancer patients and their families.
Diagnosed 14 years ago, Tara’s journey has been marked by courage and persistence.
“I want to show others that there is life beyond a diagnosis, and with determination and support, anything is possible,” she said.
Just 1 in 5 people diagnosed with brain cancer survive past five years.
It also kills more Australians under 40 than any other type of cancer.
Tara said she had already received “overwhelming support” from her local community, which has rallied behind the cause.
Friends, family, and other locals have all contributed to her efforts, helping her inch closer to her $10,000 fundraising goal.
“Every dollar raised will go towards critical research and support services that make a real difference in the lives of those battling this devastating disease.”
The Point to Pinnacle will take place on November 17 in Hobart, Tasmania.
