Netball's best and brightest receive honours

In an electrifying U14 grand final, the Firebirds staged a dramatic comeback to clinch victory over the Thunderbirds in overtime, with a final score of 41-33.

The Thunderbirds dominated the match from the outset, creeping out to a 9 goal lead at the end of the second quarter. Macy Breslin and Lara Patterson were in top form, rarely missing a shot.

Elise Voight-Jackman, named MVP for the match, controlled the centre court with poise and precision, ably supported by Edith Davy. Defenders Sophia Burges and Isla Drake Brockman were formidable, thwarting numerous Firebirds’ attempts to get the ball into the goal circle.

n the final quarter, the Firebirds mounted an impressive comeback, leveling the score at 30 apiece by full time. Sadhbh Kennedy’s relentless defence, backed by Holly Vardy, played a crucial role in the resurgence.

The attacking synergy of Amika Gobregts and Laura Dimopolous, supported by Joey Billing, shone brightly, particularly in the closing moments of the game. The match then proceeded into overtime, where Firebirds truly found their stride. They outscored the Thunderbirds 11-3, securing a hard-fought victory.

The final score stood at 41-33, marking a memorable win for the Firebirds.

The players then joined together for the Presentation and Awards night held at The River on Thursday, where the Coach’s Award, and Fairest and Best were presented for each team.

Samara O’Brien (Magpies) was awarded the Overall Fairest and Best, with Amika Gobregts (Firebirds) the Runner-Up. Holly Harrison (Mavericks) won the Spirit of Netball award for her dedication to improvement, having fun and her commitment and sportsmanship. A special thanks to Sharee Jack for organising this great night.

Eloise Jarvis was recognised for her years of dedication to umpiring, and development of the region’s umpires, with a new award named in her honour – the Ely Jarvis Umpiring Award, presented to the best umpire over the season. Jade Walsh was presented with this award for 2024.

The U18 players were then presented with their awards, with Lottie Wood receiving Fairest and Best and Neve Lentjes the Runner up. Lily Field was presented the Spirit of Netball award in the Under 18 Division.
