It was a great day on the water thanks to the volunteers and carers at Bunker Bay. All photos thanks to Mick Marlin.

The January Disabled Surfing Association event at Bunker Bay was held on a beautiful summer day.

After a slow start over 60 volunteers, 27 participants and 25 carers turned up for a lovely morning of fun on the waves.

Small waves provided enough momentum to propel the special softboards shoreward.

All was going well until at 10.45am the Westpac helicopter spotted a 3.5 meter white pointer about a kilometre offshore. The lifeguards then closed the beach and the presentations were brought forward.

President Ant Purcell thanked the generous sponsors Eagle Bay Brewery, Doral, Busselton water and Taz’s Bakery for their support of the organisation and its volunteers.

The South West branch of the association was established in 2008, with the aim of helping people of all ages and abilities enjoy the sport of surfing in a safe and supportive environment. Specialised surf equipment and buoyancy aids are used, along with the manpower of many dedicated volunteers.

The next Disabled Surfing Association event is on Sunday 16th of February, with surfing beginning at 9.30am. Volunteers are welcome and appreciated.
