Members of Margaret River’s Probus Club gathered at the Margaret River District Club on November 12 to mark 30 years since the club was first established.

“A meeting was held by the Rotary Club at the Freycinet Motel on the 30th November 1994 to form a Probus Club in Margaret River,” current president Ann Taylor explained.

“There were initially 25 members and a committee of 10, and meetings were held on a monthly basis at the Uniting Church.

“Today our numbers are a little less, but Probus managed to survive the pandemic which badly affected many clubs, providing a place for people to meet and enjoy social outings and hearing speakers on many topics.”

The club name is an amalgamation of terms to bring professional and business-retired, or semi retired people together.

Probus WA delivered an honour certificate to mark the three decades of operation, and Ann said the local chapter continued to meet once a month on a Tuesday, where visitors and guests are welcome.

“We are a friendly group, and after a short business meeting of about half an hour we have morning tea and a chat,” she said.

“If we have a speaker we then settle down to listen. Our speakers have been many and varied, ranging from a local wild life carer, who brought some animals with her and spoke about her work, and an Australian who, with his wife, belonged to the Wild Life Rangers in Africa – we learned a lot about his life.

“Although a small group we still hope that we can encourage people with a story to tell to come and talk to us, and also of course that we are able to attract new members.”
