The Southwest Brazilian Jiu Jitsu championships were held over the weekend in Busselton, featuring some of Western Australia’s best competitors at all levels.
Once again members of Margaret River Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Margaret River MMA produced outstanding performances in most weight and age brackets.
The day started with a bang as younger competitors Van Holt finished second and Charlie Tiopira won gold in both of their divisions.
Vern Pelgrave and Jed Holt faced each other in the same bracket, turning the competition into a battle for inter-club supremacy.
Jed managed to secure second place on points with Vern finishing third.
First timers Bo Taylor, Levin Diethelm and Ben Lasserre delivered impressive performances, battling mentally and physically through their matches. Bo and Levin narrowly missing out on silver, while Ben just missed the gold.
Seasoned veteran Jackson Motzouris had a tough road facing current state and national champion Zac Reagan-Smith. Jackson fought through three matches with Zac and took out second place.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is not an easy sport. Training and competing in BJJ requires a lot of confidence in your abilities which at some point will force you to confront your weaknesses.
This can be hard to swallow at times but as long as we keep moving forward things can only get better. It’s a great time with Margs BJJ and Margs MMA, so keep training.
