Lions cause massive upset over Bunbury
Harvey Brunswick Leschenault caused one of the biggest upsets of the season, when they defeated Bunbury at Brunswick Oval on Sunday.
The match started routinely enough for Bunbury, kicking five goals to one in the opening quarter, after the Lions dominated the first ten minutes without being able to kick a goal.
Jethro Barraclough would open the scoring with a good goal from deep in the pocket, which would be the start of four consecutive goals to the visitors, including two to Baiden Parsons who was looking dangerous up-forward.
A snap by Jai Rout gave the Lions their first goal but a minute later, Joel Houghton converted, giving Bunbury a very handy 23 point lead at quarter time.
Early goals to Jarrod Humphries and Tom Ward narrowed the margin in the second quarter, before Houghton kicked his second.
At the same time Brayden Prentice hobbled to the change rooms with a knee injury, and soon after the Lions would also lose Jesse Crichton. Bunbury would lead by sixteen points at half time.
The third term belonged to the Lions who kicked four goals in ten minutes, with the pick of the four coming from Jai Rout, who banana-kicked a set shot at goal from beyond the boundary line to put the Lions in front.
Leading by six points at the final break, the final quarter would be desperate, with neither team able to score through the first ten minutes.
A mad scramble on the line saw John Manuel get boot to ball, opening the lead to twelve points.
Jarrod Humphries would snap a good goal courtesy of a defensive error to make the margin eighteen points, and when Jai Rout kicked his fourth from a set shot, the Lions were home.
Mackenna Taylor kicked a late goal for Bunbury, their only goal of the second half, with 48 minutes of playing time elapsing between goals. It would also end a run of seven consecutive goals kicked by the Lions.
