Students, teachers and parents at Cowaramup Primary School marked NAIDOC Day last week with a day of cultural activities and celebrations across the school.
Wadandi custodian Mitchella Hutchins conducted a Welcome to Country while the school came together to sing in the local traditional language, and land artist Elaine Clocherty created an artwork with help from students.
This year’s NAIDOC theme is ‘Keep the fire burning! Blak, loud and proud’.
Teacher Leesa Mathers said the result was a “true sense of culture and kinship”.
“We started with a gallery walk, it was truly impressive with lots of amazing art in the classrooms,” she said. “The student councillors commenced the assembly with history and information about inspirational indigenous people.”
Students from Room 6 read out poems, which also included some traditional Wadandi words.
“The day continued with amazing activities, such as art, mask making, texture and design, symbols, spear throwing, traditional games and our stunning collaborative land art,” Ms Mathers said.
“All students, family, friends, teachers and elders were totally immersed in our special day.”
