South West surfers have once again showed why the region is a mecca for young waveriders, claiming multiple wins at the second event of the 2025 WA Junior Surfing Titles in Trigg over the weekend.

The local contingent joined a group of 100 of the state’s best young surfers competing across eight divisions, as four new State champions were crowned ahead of the third and final event of the series in Geraldton in July.

“The conditions really turned it on for us this weekend,” said Surfing WA’s Justin Majeks.

“From sun-up to sundown, the level of surfing, the energy on the beach, and the support for our competitors was amazing. You couldn’t ask for a better winter weekend in WA.”

Among the standouts were Olive Hardy (Margaret River), Maverick Wilson (Dunsborough), Poppy Redman Carr (Dunsborough), Ethan Anderson (Cowaramup), Ily Fraser (Margaret River), Ollie Holmes (Dunsborough), Luna Thomas (Margaret River), and Kyuss Rimmer (Trigg).

Hardy, the reigning Under-16 Girls national champion, locked in the Under-18 Girls state title, showcasing her trademark power and precision.

Hardy drew from her strong surfing pedigree on her way to victory on the strength of a combined total of 13.50.

“I’m over the moon to take out the win and wrap up the state title here at Trigg,” she said.

“All the girls were ripping and although the Under-18 Girls is one of the smaller divisions, the girls pushed me all the way.”

A commanding performance from Maverick Wilson saw him power through the event and claim victory in the hotly contested Under-18 Boys division.

“I felt really good through the event and the waves have been really fun for Perth,” Wilson said.

“This is my last year in the juniors and I’m already looking forward to Geraldton to hopefully capture the state title after missing out in 2024.”

Poppy Redman Carr captured her maiden state title event win with an emphatic display. The daughter of former World No. 2 Melanie Redman Carr, Poppy showcased world-class skill and composure on her path to victory.

“This is my first state title win, I’ve come second and third at events in the past,” she said.

“Today reminded me of Smith’s Beach and it’s been a really fun event and well done to all the girls in the final.”

Ethan Anderson, stamped his authority on the Under-16 Boys final with explosive surfing highlighting his performance. Anderson posted a two-wave total of 12.77, to edge out Geraldton’s Cruz Macdonald, by just 0.10.

“I’m so happy right now and the boys pushed me all the way. I learnt so much at last year’s national titles and I can’t wait to get back there.”

Ily Fraser continued her dream run with another strong performance, claiming her second straight victory with a combined total of 13.67.

“I’m so happy to win again and defend my state championship,” she said. “My brother Okie is my inspiration and I hope I can go one better at this year’s national title.”

Ollie Holmes handled the pressure with poise to take the win in the Under-14 Boys final. Holmes sliced and diced everything that came his way, posting a combined total of 13.20.

“I just love competing and I’m pumped to get the win,” said Holmes.

Luna Thomas, surfed with a confidence beyond her years to claim her first state championship in the Under-12 Girls division. At just 11 years of age, Thomas’ future looks bright and she hopes to one day be a professional surfer.

“I just love surfing and coming off the back of the Pro, I’m really motivated to push myself,” she said.
