It's been 20 years of community playtime across the generations with the Margaret River Intergenerational Playgroup. Picture via the Mail archives.

The Margaret River Intergenerational Playgroup is celebrating two decades, with families and senior residents spending time playing together each week.

Group coordinator Mary Elton said between one and five groups per week had met over those 20 years, with many participants and their children establishing lifelong friendships.

“With many young families not having their extended family nearby, the intergenerational contact has been particularly valued,” Mary said.

“For older people who might not have contact with younger families in their everyday life, the interaction provides much joy.

“The parents of the children often comment that having someone hold their baby, read a story or just make them a cup of tea is greatly appreciated.”

The group is run by the Margaret River Uniting Church and has been supported by Lotterywest and PlaygroupWA.

A celebration will be held on Saturday November 2 from 1:30pm to 4:00pm, with free activities for all ages including afternoon tea. Everyone is invited to join the celebration at 60 Tingle Ave.
