DUNSBOROUGH 14-year-old Ky South became the youngest bowler in Busselton Margaret River Cricket Association history to take five wickets on his A-Grade debut, when he led his side to victory over Vasse at Bovell Park on Saturday.

South cleaned up the Vasse tail by grabbing the last four wickets in his final over (4 wickets in 7 balls including a wide) as Vasse were bowled out for 135 off 44 overs, in response to Dunsborough’s total of 192 in 46 overs.

South finished with 5-32 off 10 overs.

His performance complemented a tight display of bowling from paceman Anthony Quinn (1-7 off seven overs) and spinner Elijah Truscott (1-21 off 10 overs) for the visitors.

Phil Watts with 67 runs led the batting for Dunsborough on a good wicket for batting, while Vasse’s best players included the consistent Simon Harkness (42) and Jeremy Murphy (34) and new blood Daniel Rana, who struck a stylish 35 off 43 balls after being roped into the eleven “from the servo on Thursday”.

At Barnard Park, Yallingup-Oddbods enjoyed their maiden win for the A-Grade season when they comfortably dispensed with Cowaramup by 54 runs.

Batting first, YOBS tallied 139 in 42 overs with skipper Nayton Colombera (36) and Brendan Millar (43) holding the innings together well.

Connor Oates (4-19) and Ben Shepherd (3-8) outshone star bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile (1-12 off seven overs) in the Bulls’ attack.

Great bowling from Haig Colombera and Christo Le Roux (two wickets each) and an excellent display of off-spin from Ben Payne (4-12 off eight overs) restricted the Bulls to just 85 all out in reply.

But the highlight of the Cowaramup innings was an outstanding run out by YOBS captain Nayton Colombera to dismiss opener Aayush Patel for single figures.

At Margaret River, Hawks maintained their unbeaten run this summer when they defeated the young St Marys team by an even 150 runs.

Put into bat, Hawks maintained a cracking pace thanks to Shane Joyce (82 off 94 balls) and Grant Garstone (76 off 102 balls) and finished on 223 all out.

Teenagers Sean Zahra, Ryley Barrow, Will Snaddon and Aaron Mattock claimed eight wickets between them for Saints, while skipper Zoz Saeed took the other two.

Meanwhile the Hawks attack – in years more than double the age of the Saints attack – showed the virtue of experience over youth as they dismissed Saints for 85 in reply.

Offspinner Danny Weston and left-armer Garstone claimed three wickets each for Hawks.

In B-Grade cricket, Dunsborough’s big win over Vasse on the synthetic wicket at Bovell Park was highlighted by a once-in-a-lifetime catch by Jake Charles for Dunsborough.

After covering a lot of ground to deep midwicket, Charles held a spectacular two-handed catch jumping backwards to leave his mark on the game.

Dunsborough, batting first, totalled 9-187 from 45 overs, with Ben Cadd and skipper Cam Morris (53 runs each) leading the way, Brendan Cribb taking three wickets for Vasse.

In reply, Vasse were dismissed for 89, Judd Truscott taking 4-13 for Dunsborough.

The other B-Grade game, played at Margaret River, had a thrilling finish.

Hawks were dismissed for 175 (Tom Joyce 63) and looked on course for a comfortable win with St Marys 9-135 in reply, only for the last pair of Karl Rogers and Allen Hingston to put on 36 runs and nearly get their side home, failing by just 4 runs.

Left-arm wrist spinner Bailey Groves finished with 5-37 for Hawks.

In C-Grade cricket, an unbeaten 112 off 120 balls by Sam Lucas guided YOBS Academy (3-192) to a four-ball win over Dunsborough Blue (6-191) at Barnard Park.

A high-scoring game at Vasse Playing Fields saw Josh Fry strike 127 for Cowaramup, whose total of 234 proved 15 runs too much for Vasse (9-219, Matt Baker 65 runs).

The other C-Grade game played saw Dunsborough White (143) outlast St Marys (58 all out), Stu Watson taking 5-13 for Dunsborough.

Nannup were unable to field a side and forfeited the final game to the Margaret River Hawks.
