Invitees, VIPs and supporters took the train to the end of Busselton’s iconic jetty last Thursday for the official opening of Western Australia’s first Underwater Sculpture Park.

Hosted by Busselton Jetty Inc (BJI) as the sun set over the ocean, the launch was attended by guests including WA Chief Scientist and Lotterywest Chair, Professor Peter Klinken, Hon. Jackie Jarvis MLC, Hon. Nola Marino MP, Libby Mettam MLA, and Deputy Mayor Cr Anne Ryan.

The event included a guided snorkel tour of the 13 stunning sculptures crafted by eleven talented WA artists which make up the park, a fusion of art, tourism, and marine conservation.

Many of the artists responsible for the works were also at the end of the Jetty to enjoy the celebration, as guests jumped into the water to get a close-up view of the one-of-a-kind artworks.

Prof Peter Klinken expressed his admiration for the initiative.

“The Busselton Jetty Underwater Sculpture Park is a testament to the intersection of art, culture, and conservation, showcasing Western Australia’s commitment to marine preservation,” he said.

Chair of Busselton Jetty Inc, Dr Natasha Teakle also shared her enthusiasm for the project.

“This initiative aligns perfectly with our commitment to eco-tourism, low-impact travel, and the preservation of marine ecosystems,” Dr Teakle said.

“We are excited to offer visitors a unique experience that combines artistic expression with environment awareness.”

Sales of passes to the Sculpture Park will contribute to the preservation of the Jetty, with BJI already sending 25 percent of ticket sales to ongoing maintenance.

The Jetty’s Environment Foundation will monitor the sculptures, which will act not only as drawcards for art lovers and water users, but potential habitats for marine life.

As well as the guided snorkel tour, launch event guests enjoyed delicious dishes courtesy of award-winning Jetty Executive Chef Tony Howell, a solar-powered train ride on the Ray White Stocker Preston Express, and private tour of the Underwater Observatory.

The Underwater Sculpture Park can be accessed with a $4 Dive Snorkel Pass.
