Geographe farmers called to join testing program

Beef, sheep and dairy farmers across the Geographe catchment are invited to take part in the 2025/2026 Geographe Soil Testing Program, now open for expressions of interest.

Since launching in 2010, this successful program has supported more than 40 percent of Geographe farmers with soil testing and targeted nutrient advice, helping to establish soil testing as a trusted, common-sense practice across the farming community.

The program helps farmers fine-tune their fertiliser use, improve pasture productivity, and protect the health of local waterways.

Many participants also report significant savings by applying nutrients only where they’re truly needed.

Forrest Beach farmer, Robyn Robertson, said the program delivers clear value.

“The program gave me information so I could get the most out of my farm, know where my dollars are best spent, and how to better understand my soils. It’s been 100 percent worthwhile. A must-do for all farmers”, said Robyn.

Participants receive whole-farm soil testing, colour-coded nutrient maps, spring plant tissue testing, and hands-on soil and nutrition workshops.

Farmers then work with their preferred accredited agronomist to develop a fertiliser plan tailored to their production goals and paddocks.

In 2024, GeoCatch worked with over 40 farmers to soil test more than 600 paddocks across 5,700 hectares in the catchment – and the program continues to grow.

GeoCatch Sustainable Agriculture Coordinator Jenelle Schult said the benefits are clear for both farm productivity and the environment.

“In many cases, farmers are applying fertiliser that isn’t needed, while underlying constraints like acidity or trace element deficiencies are missed, limiting pasture growth.

“This program gives farmers the tools to use science, not guesswork, to target nutrients – potentially saving money, improving productivity and reducing runoff into Geographe Bay,” she said.

This year, the program also includes support through Soils – New Horizons, opening the door for farmers just outside the catchment boundary to access soil testing and fertility planning through GeoCatch.

Also new in 2025 is the ‘Refer a Friend’ offer. If a previous participant refers a new farmer to the program, both will receive a $100 discount on their soil testing fees – meaning new participants can access a program valued at over $5,000 for just $200.

Applications close Sunday, 20 July 2025.
