The 'Margaret River - East Fremantle Annual Challenge' first began in 1990, and after several years hiatus, was back on over the weekend.

It was ‘Game On’ at the local tennis club over the weekend, as the East Fremantle Lawn Tennis Club (EFLTC) travelled to the Margaret River Tennis Club on Saturday, to compete in a historic interclub tournament, while reigniting an exciting, long-standing rivalry.

Almost 50 players took part in the event, resulting in full courts and the EFLTC securing a win by just one set.

Over 44 sets (4 rounds of 11 sets), the visiting club secured wins in 20 sets, while the MRTC took out 19 sets, and a further 5 draws were reached.

The ‘Margaret River – East Fremantle Annual Challenge’ first began in 1990.

“We were thrilled to welcome the East Fremantle Lawn Tennis Club back to our courts for an epic day of tennis,” Carl Sanderson, MRTC Club President said.

“It’s been over seven years since we competed, so it was wonderful to rekindle the competition.”

MRTC Club Captain Justin Todd said the energy from players on the court was “incredible”.

“It was an honour to compete in this tournament, which has so much history, and we’re proud of our club members’ enthusiasm and effort,” Justin said.

Margaret River Tennis Club Coach Anthony ‘Tambo’ Tamborriello said there was more interclub fun on the horizon.

“It was a pleasure to host this event, and we plan to run more interclub competitions like this and competitions for our juniors here in Margaret River in the future.”

The MRTC currently runs weekly singles and doubles pennants competitions along with social tennis.
