Athletes from home and abroad are putting the final touches to their preparations for this Sunday’s 20th anniversary IRONMAN Western Australia.

The 2024 event has sold out, with athletes set to line up on the beach at Geographe Bay in Busselton on Sunday 1 December.

The event is also set to be the largest ever IRONMAN Western Australia and IRONMAN 70.3 Western Australia Asia-Pacific Championship in its history, with more than 3,400 athletes racing.

“IRONMAN Western Australia is a highlight on the calendar and continues to draw athletes to the region from across the world and we can’t wait to show off the South West throughout the coming week to competitors from more than 40 countries,” Carl Smith, Regional Director for The IRONMAN Group Oceania said.

“As well as thousands of age-group athletes we’re set to welcome the largest ever professional field racing in IRONMAN 70.3 Western Australia, with the event the penultimate round in the new IRONMAN Pro Series.”

Western Australia Deputy Premier and Minister for Tourism, the Hon. Rita Saffioti MLA, said she was looking forward to IRONMAN returning to Busselton.

“This year marks a fantastic milestone for IRONMAN Western Australia as it celebrates 20 years as a staple in WA’s calendar of events, bringing thousands of visitors to our South West region in what will this year be the largest ever IRONMAN in WA history,” Minister Saffioti said.

“Large-scale mass participation events like these not only drive visitation, they create vibrancy in our regional communities as well as generate employment and volunteering opportunities that bring locals together.”

The Pro Series sees athletes racing for a US$1.7million season ending bonus pool, with each event broadcast around the world, including Sunday’s IRONMAN 70.3. Professionals racing at IRONMAN 70.3 Western Australia will also race for a share of a US$75,000 prize purse, on top of the season ending amount.

Athletes and fans in Busselton are invited to attend a special IRONMAN Pro Panel at 5pm on Friday at the Busselton Foreshore Amphitheatre with a number of the world’s top professional triathletes to speak.

Athletes competing at IRONMAN WA will have the chance to qualify for the 2025 IRONMAN World Championship, with the men’s race to be held in Nice, France in September and the women’s in Kona, Hawai’i in October.

IRONMAN Western Australia will see athletes taking on a 3.8km swim, 180km ride and 42.2km run, with IRONMAN 70.3 Western Australia featuring a 1.9km swim, 90km ride and 21.1km run.
