There’s a new, BIG reason to make a stop at Dunsborough’s Yungarra Gallery, with the unveiling of a stunning life-sized drawing of one of Western Australia’s most beloved icons by a talented Indigenous artist.
For nearly six decades, Tricia the elephant was adored by locals and visitors to WA, touching the hearts of millions who made the trip to Perth Zoo.
Arriving in 1963 from Vietnam, Tricia became more than just an attraction – the gentle giant was a cherished companion to those who worked with her, and a symbol of connection between people and wildlife.
Her intelligence, grace, and quiet wisdom made an unforgettable impact on generations of visitors, before she passed in July 2022 at the age of 65, leaving behind a powerful legacy.

Now, that legacy continues through the work of artist Ross Potter, whose life-size drawing of Tricia is now on display at Yungarra Gallery.
Known for his hyper-realistic graphite drawings, Potter has a unique artistic process.
“I need to see how she moves, how she holds herself, and feel her presence and truly get to know her before I can capture it on paper,” he said.
Potter was given rare access to spend intimate time with Tricia, studying her movements, feeling her energy, and understanding the quiet wisdom she carried.
Chris Ioppolo, owner of Yungarra Gallery, said this deep connection is evident in Potter’s drawing, a life-size tribute that captures not just Tricia’s physical form, but her very essence.
“[It is] one of the most impressive artworks I have ever seen,” Chris said of the work. “This isn’t just a drawing – it’s an experience.
“People have the opportunity to stand before Tricia once more, to feel her presence, and to remember what she meant to WA.”
Alongside the extraordinary piece, Yungarra has installed a donation box, with all proceeds going to the International Elephant Project.
“This ensures that Tricia’s impact continues to make a difference.
“For those who knew and loved Tricia, for those who appreciate remarkable art, and for those who believe in the power of storytelling through creativity, this is an unmissable experience.”
