Margaret River Soup Kitchen has purchased new rice cookers thanks to a donation from Margaret River Lions Club.

The Soup Kitchen, widely known as the Soupie, has never actually served soup.

Established in 1995, as a meeting place welcoming people from all walks of life to enjoy an affordable and nutritious hot meal together, the Soupie serves curries, dahl, rice and salad.

“We really needed to upgrade the rice cookers we had, so the Lions Club donation came at a very good time,” Soupie Coordinator, Jaes Bidwell said.

“Over winter, access to a hearty, hot meal becomes even more important for people who are sleeping rough or struggling financially. A big thank you to the Lions Club.”

Last year, over 12,000 meals were served.

The food is prepared by a team of volunteers in the commercial kitchen at the Community Centre and served in the old Doctors Surgery cottage every Monday and Wednesday at 5pm.

Volunteers help with food prep, meal service and collection of donated ingredients.

The Soupie participates in the Second Bite food rescue program and is always grateful for the excess produce local gardeners donate.
