The City of Busselton has confirmed a banner heralding the arrival of fast food chain McDonalds in the South West town of Dunsborough is a prank.
A photograph of the sign, supposedly announcing the restaurant would open in 2025 near the Dunsborough Tavern, quickly attracting hundreds of comments on social media from locals both opposed and supporting the idea.
“I can confirm it is a prank and the City has no received or pending applications for a McDonalds,” a City spokesperson told the Mail on Wednesday.
Fake McDonalds signs and banners have been a regular favourite of pranksters in the South West over the years, with a number appearing in Margaret River and other towns.
McDonalds opted not to purchase the land in 2014 due to access restrictions to the carpark, after a public outcry over the proposal in 2013.
