It was another fantastic turnout of competitors and supporters for the South West Jiu-Jitsu Championship over the weekend, with competitors coming from all over the state to compete.
Once again, Margaret River made their presence known, securing numerous gold, silver, and bronze medals across all brackets.
The day started early with our youngest competitor, Solomon Gould, battling it out in a merged bracket of 6-8 years. Solomon did a great job defending the attacks and finished with a bronze medal.
Next up was another first-timer, Conor McIvor. He and his brother Kallum both managed to secure medals.
From there, the action turned up.
High-energy powerhouses Harrison Dorman and Vern Pelgrave both secured silver in their divisions with a couple of fantastic armbars.
Charlie Tiopira, while being served some humble pie in his Gi event, was able to get a bronze in his No-Gi bracket.
Bo Taylor came onto the mats and exploded against his opponent, securing a gold medal in a very fast and convincing win.
The Holt brothers, Van and Jed, came into their bouts on fire, with Van managing a gold in his No-Gi event and Jed securing a silver.
Meanwhile, their father, Holt (aka Killer Kye), managed a gold.
The Margs BJJ adult team was outstanding – Veterans Ryan Dunkling and Justin Burley secured numerous wins.
Sammy “The Octopus” Wright smothered his way to gold. French import Charlotte Durin secured a silver, as did Victor Oito Oito.
Tom Utting had a great performance as a first-timer.
Big Kris and Thomas Mitchell had two great heavyweight battles against each other, with a lot of sweat poured onto the mats.
A special mention goes to some outstanding performances by Dave “Mushroom Man” Harwood and Sonny Bridges. Dave earned his well-deserved Double Gold, while Sonny made an impressive first-time appearance, winning silver.
As the day progressed, the matches became even more intense. Ben Lasserre battled through two tough brackets, finishing third in both.
He and his brother Max both secured medals in their brackets, despite facing some amazing competitors.
Levin Diethelm and Johnny Jack had to battle each other for silver, with Levin coming out on top. Johnny still managed a third in his brackets.
Henry Sherrer, Tahiti Grey, and veteran competitor Jackson Motzouris all had great moments and faced some amazing opponents. Their efforts will not go to waste and will become part of their BJJ story.
Another great performance from Margs BJJ as our club grows stronger by the day.
