An eager crowd attended Margaret River HEART Nala Bardip Mia on Thursday night for a unique yet short-lived viewing of over 200 bowls donated for this year’s ‘Bowls for Soupie’ fundraiser.

While it is the fourth year of the fundraiser, it is the first time that all the bowls were on display in one place, at least until the opening of sales.

Twenty-one local artists donated over 200 bowls specifically made for the cause.

All funds raised go to Margaret River Community Centre for the ongoing provision of community support services, including the Soup Kitchen, affectionately called the Soupie even though it only serves curries.

“This event is a way to honour the artists who have given so very generously”, Lydell Huntly, Manager of Margaret River Community Centre said.

The talented potters have donated not only their bowls, but some have given their time preparing the local clay, as well as firing, labelling and transporting the bowls.

“What a wonderful sight to behold,” Lydell said.

“We are very grateful to the artists.”

The collection showed the diverse form that a bowl can take, a wide variety of shapes, sizes, textures and colours was on display.

Potter and artist coordinator, Ian Dowling spoke to the crowd describing bowls as a favourite for potters to make.

“Potters’ bowls are a primordial form, a container that not only holds the food you enjoy but have the feel of something that are gifts from our earth and fire,” he said.

“Knowing they will be used gives great satisfaction to the maker.”

Once formalities were completed, sales were opened and over 60 bowls were sold, with artists pleased to witness the delight of buyers choosing their designs.

Sales continue until 23 October, Monday to Friday 10am – 4pm, or until sold out.

Bowls are purchased as part of ticket that includes entry to and a meal at the main event on Thursday 24 October, when people will gather at the Community Centre, with their bowls, for an embellished Soupie feast.

Local chefs and musicians will be contributing to the event alongside regular Soupie volunteers.

Should the bowls sell out, meal only tickets are also available. Visit artsmargaretriver.com.au for details.

There is also a silent auction of a selection of bowls, and one unique dinner set donated by Stuart McKay.

Auction pieces will be showcased on the Community Centre’s Facebook page with winning bids declared at 8pm on 24 October.
