Cowaramup surfer John Haddow has paid emotional tribute to his late granddaughter, as he claimed victory at the Thermos Australian Longboard Titles on the Tweed Coast.

Emerging from the Kingscliff Beachsurf triumphant in the Men’s Over 70s division, the new Australian Champion dedicated the win to little Mina, who tragically passed away this year, at just three years of age, after a battle with brain cancer.

“I got a great wave within the first five minutes of my heat and scored an 8-point ride,” Haddow said.

“I paddled back out, and almost immediately another near-perfect wave landed right in my lap.

“I rode it all the way down the beach, making it through multiple sections.”

The 71 year old surfer said it must have been the “angel on my shoulder” contributing to his wave choice.

“I’d like to dedicate this win to my granddaughter, Mina.

“To travel across the country from Western Australia, put it all on the line, and walk away with an Australian Championship after everything that’s happened recently, it’s just so special.”

In June, Haddow claimed the WA State Champion title in the Over 70 Men’s Longboard at Parry’s Beach near Denmark, with an emphatic win over Stan Davies (Daglish).

He stunned judges with a memorable and passionate performance, delivering a heartfelt dedication to Mina after claiming his win.

Fellow surfers and friends were quick to heap praise on the Cowaramup champion.

“Just so good,” wrote legendary South West surfer Bill Gibson, branding Haddow “just a legend”.

“Been a good mate since school. Never competed until last year. Then it just happened.

“Talk about busting down the door! And now also a sought after public speaker. I can’t have more of a smile on my face. Little Mina will be looking down with a sparkle in her eyes.”

Meanwhile, Mitch Wolff said the win was “no surprise”.

Running from Wednesday, July 22 to Sunday, July 27, the event showcased surfers from the Under 18s all the way through to the Over 70s.

The week kicked off with three inspiring days of surfing in the Masters Divisions (Over 40 – Over 70), setting a high bar for the competition.

The Juniors and Opens divisions then hit the water, bringing fresh energy and fierce performances.
